How to add an M3U playlist

Updated

At a glance

Copy the M3U or M3U8 link your provider gave you, open your IPTV player, choose to add a playlist URL and paste it. Add the XMLTV EPG link if you have one. In iptvolt, Paste any link detects M3U, XSPF and Xtream links on its own.

What do I need to add an M3U playlist?

The playlist link from your IPTV provider, and optionally a second link for the TV guide. Providers send them in the welcome email or show them in their customer area. The playlist link looks like https://example.com/playlist.m3u or ends in .m3u8; the guide is an XMLTV file that often ends in .xml or .xml.gz.

Before you start, have these ready:

  • The playlist link. Copy it in full, including https:// and anything after a question mark.
  • The EPG link, if you have one. It is optional. Many playlists name their guide inside the file.
  • A source you are allowed to use. A player only plays what you give it. If you are unsure about a service, read is IPTV legal? first.

It helps to know what kind of link you actually have, because providers don’t always label them clearly:

  • A link ending in .m3u or .m3u8 is a playlist. If you open an .m3u8 link and it plays a single video, it is a stream, not a channel list. That still works in iptvolt as a one-channel source.
  • A link ending in .xspf is an XSPF playlist, an XML format that some players and servers export.
  • A link with get.php, username= and password= in it is generated by an Xtream server for your account.
  • Three separate details (server, username, password) are an Xtream login, not a playlist link at all.

iptvolt ships no playlists of its own, and no player should. If an app or website offers you a ready-made list of channels at no cost, treat that as a warning sign, not a feature.

Add the playlist in iptvolt

iptvolt runs on iPhone, iPad and Android. The steps are the same on all three:

  1. Open the app. On first launch you land on Add your source. Later, you find the same screen under Settings, Sources.
  2. Choose Paste any link. This is the quickest way: iptvolt looks at the link and decides whether it is an M3U playlist, an XSPF playlist, an Xtream login or a single stream.
  3. Paste your playlist link and confirm.
  4. If you prefer to fill in the fields yourself, choose M3U / XSPF URL instead. Give the playlist a name, paste the link into Playlist URL, and put the guide link into EPG URL (optional).
  5. Tap Add source. The app downloads the playlist and your channels appear on the Live tab.

One detail matters: if your link contains get.php with a username and password in it, it is really an Xtream login dressed up as a playlist. Paste it with Paste any link and iptvolt sets it up as an Xtream source, which also brings movies, series and your account status. The M3U vs Xtream Codes guide explains why that is usually better.

The free version of iptvolt holds one source. If you want several playlists side by side, Pro removes that limit.

No, but you want one. The EPG (electronic programme guide) tells the app what is on each channel. Without it you still get every channel, but no now and next and no catch-up list for M3U channels. Many playlists already name their guide, so the app may find it on its own.

You have two ways to get a guide into iptvolt:

  • Enter it yourself in the EPG URL field when you add the playlist. Use the link your provider gave you for the guide.
  • Let the playlist tell the app. The first line of many playlists looks like #EXTM3U url-tvg="https://example.com/guide.xml". iptvolt reads url-tvg, x-tvg-url and tvg-url and loads that guide on its own.

If both exist, your own link comes first and the header guide fills gaps. Guides can be plain XML or gzip-compressed. Read what EPG and XMLTV are for how matching works.

What the app reads from your playlist

Each channel in an M3U file is two lines: an #EXTINF line with attributes, then the stream URL. A typical entry looks like this:

#EXTINF:-1 tvg-id="channel.one" tvg-logo="https://example.com/logo.png" group-title="News",Channel One
https://example.com/live/channel-one.m3u8

AttributeWhat iptvolt does with it
tvg-idLinks the channel to its programmes in the guide
tvg-logoShows the channel logo
group-titlePuts the channel into a category on the Live tab
catchup, catchup-daysTurns on Start over and the archive for that channel
#EXTVLCOPT:http-user-agentSends that User-Agent with the stream

iptvolt also reads Referer and Origin headers, #EXTHTTP lines and a |User-Agent= suffix on the URL, for providers whose streams only open with them. If the playlist contains movie and series entries, they move to the Movies and Series tabs instead of crowding the channel list.

Why won’t my playlist load?

Usually the link is mistyped, expired or leads to a web page instead of a playlist. Sometimes the file is empty, too large for the phone, or a portal address that isn’t a playlist at all. iptvolt names the cause instead of showing a generic error. These are the messages you may see and what to do:

  • Couldn’t reach the server. Check the link for typos and your internet connection. Open the link in a browser on the same device to see if it answers at all.
  • The server answered with an error. The link is wrong, expired or blocked. A 401 or 403 usually means the login inside the link is no longer valid. Ask your provider for a current link.
  • This link doesn’t return a playlist. The address leads to a web page or needs a login first. Make sure you copied the playlist link, not the address of the provider’s website.
  • The playlist loaded, but it contains no channels. The file is empty or in a format that isn’t M3U. Ask your provider to check it.
  • This playlist is too large to load on this device. Some playlists hold an enormous number of entries. If your provider offers an Xtream login, use that instead: it loads in parts.
  • Stalker / MAG portal links aren’t supported. A portal address is not a playlist. Ask for an M3U link or an Xtream login.

If the playlist loads but a channel won’t play, the stream itself may be offline, or it may need a different engine. Try other player switches to the built-in VLC engine, which also handles formats like MKV, AVI and raw TS. Protected (DRM) channels can’t be played by iptvolt. More checks are on the support page.

If many channels suddenly stop at the same time, the problem is usually on the provider’s side or with your account, not with the playlist. When a stream is refused, iptvolt checks the server’s answer and tells you if all connections of your account are in use or if the provider refused that channel.

After the playlist is added

Once your channels are in, a few things are worth setting up:

  • Favourites. Star the channels you watch most. They appear on Home and in Favourites.
  • Hide what you never watch. Long-press a channel to hide it, or lock categories behind a PIN with the parental lock.
  • Watch on the TV. AirPlay and Chromecast are free. iptvolt checks whether the TV can play that stream before it sends it.
  • Back up or sync. A backup keeps your sources and settings. With Pro, a sync code links up to 5 of your devices, end-to-end encrypted, without an account.

Pull to refresh on the Live tab reloads the playlist when your provider changes it. For everything the app does with M3U sources, see the M3U player page.

Questions

Where do I get an M3U playlist link?

From the IPTV service you subscribe to. Providers send the link in their welcome email or show it in their customer area. iptvolt and other players ship no playlists of their own.

Is an M3U8 link the same as an M3U link?

For adding a playlist, yes. M3U8 is the same list format saved as UTF-8 text. iptvolt accepts both, as well as XSPF playlists, through the same playlist URL field.

Do I have to add an EPG link?

No, it is optional. Without guide data you still get every channel, but no now and next. Many playlists name their guide in the first line with url-tvg or x-tvg-url, and iptvolt reads it on its own.

Why does my playlist load but show no channels?

The file is empty or not in M3U format, for example a web page or an error message from the server. Open the link in a browser to check, and ask your provider for a working playlist link.

Can I add a playlist file from my phone?

iptvolt adds playlists by link: an M3U, M3U8 or XSPF URL, an Xtream login or a single stream URL. Ask your provider for the playlist link rather than a downloaded file.
